I’m thrilled to be teaching at RISD Continuing Education again! I’ll be teaching my Human Anatomy: Introduction class online this winter session. Classes start Jan. 10 and run for 6 weeks. Classes are asynchronous and are taught through the platform Canvas. Sign up here! We will be learning about proportion, structure, bony landmarks, and ALL THE FUN THINGS! I love artistic anatomy, and I love sharing my knowledge and enthusiasm with others.
I have had over 10 years experience teaching figure drawing, portraiture, and artistic anatomy to students of all ages and experience levels. I am passionate about helping students improve their draftsmanship through a solid understanding of proportion, anatomical structure, and drawing technique. My process of using subcutaneous bony landmarks and plane changes as a roadmap for understanding underlaying structure and conceptualizing form helps students of all levels gain a greater understanding of the figure. I can’t wait to help you on your artistic journey!
"I was lucky enough to be in Emily's Figure Drawing class over two semesters in the RISD CE program. The simplicity in which Emily breaks down the complexity of the human body to help understand and see what you're drawing is awe-inspiring and helped me to understand the WHAT I was drawing as well as the HOW to draw it."
"Emily communicates complex material in a clear and concise way – she clearly loves teaching and wants her students to succeed."
"An artist told me once,
'if you find a teacher who parallels your goals and dreams, then always continue to learn from her.' That teacher is Emily Slapin."
